Authorities confirmed two died in a Madera County plane crash Thursday afternoon.

The plane took off from the Madera Municipal Airport around 1 p.m. and for unknown reasons, crashed in a field, according to Madera County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Kayla Serratto.

She says the plane had just taken off from the airport.

The victims have been identified by the sheriff’s office as Fresno residents Joe Kulbeth, 76, and Saverio Chimienti Jr., 28.

Fire officials, the sheriff’s office and the National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the scene.

By 4:15 p.m., the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad arrived on the scene of the crash. The Madera County Sheriff’s Office says they were called out to disarm safety equipment on the plane.
