Off-duty officer, firefighters attempt to rescue a man struck by a car

LOS BANOS, California - A man died after being struck by a car in the 600 block of H Street in Los Banos on Tuesday.

At around 7:09 p.m., Los Banos police officers responded to a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian, the department said in a Facebook post.

Before officers arrived, an off-duty officer and two volunteer firefighters were in the area and began rendering aid to the severely injured victim.

Officers say the driver who reportedly hit the pedestrian was cooperative and "understandably shaken" by the collision.

The driver was not under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, the post said.

The Merced County Coroner's Office is working to identify the victim.

Anyone with information or witnessed the collision is asked to call Det. Sean Bayard at 209-827-7070, ext. 0.
