Neighbors help a woman and her child out of a burning building

Local News

Tuesday morning around 8 a.m. a fire broke out at the corner of Valencia and Arthur avenues in Fresno.

Jessie Ramirez is a neighbor. He said he was outside and could hear someone trapped inside the burning house.

“I could hear the woman screaming inside the house and that’s why we ran over,” said Ramirez.

According to Ramirez he ran over to help his neighbor and realized the front door was stuck. So, he and his uncle busted the door open to rescue the woman and her baby.

“When the front door flew open a lot of the smoke started coming out and the side windows were popping,” said Ramirez.

Adan Garcia was outside when his uncle and cousin ran to help the woman. He said he has never seen that much smoke before.

“I look at the house and see the door open and there was a lot of smoke,” said Garcia.

Adan said his first reaction was to call 911.

Fresno Fire Captain Robert Castillo said the woman and her baby are extremely lucky neighbors came to their rescue.

“In this case the residence were very fortunate,” said Castillo. “They were, according to reports, asleep at the time.”

According to Castillo the woman woke up because her fire alarm was going off.

Fresno Fire said the woman and the baby were taken to the hospital but only suffered minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
