MERCED, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) — One passenger was killed, another suffered major injuries, while the driver was arrested Saturday afternoon following a suspected drunk driving-related crash in Merced, according to Merced Police.
Officers responded to the area of 900 V St. around 6:50 p.m. for a fatal crash. The driver, identified as Luis Rodriguez Amezcua, 22, drove a black 2014 Chevrolet Camaro west on 9th Street and failed to stop at a stop sign — crashing into two vehicles.
Witnesses told officers that Amezcua was driving at a high rate of speed, never slowing down for the stop sign, Police said. Amezcua initially fled the scene, leaving behind his to passengers, but witnesses led officers to him a block away.
One passenger, a Latino man, was airlifted to Modesto with major injuries. The other passenger, also identified as a Latino man, was declared dead at the scene. The occupants of the other two vehicles only suffered minor injuries.
Officers talking to Amezcua noticed he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, Police said. He was arrested on charges of DUI, vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run.
