A man in a wheelchair was struck and killed by a vehicle Monday while illegally crossing an intersection in central Fresno.
According to Fresno Police, the vehicle versus pedestrian happened just before 6:00 a.m. near the Cedar and Shields intersection.
Police said the driver didn’t see the man crossing the street.
“His clothing and wheelchair are dark in color and at that hour unfortunately he was just not visible,” Fresno Police Sergeant Eric Hodges said.
According to police, nine pedestrians were killed by vehicles so far this year, in seven of those cases, the pedestrian was at fault.
“We continue to see the number rise in terms of pedestrian related fatalities in our city and the number one answer is that of awareness,” Chief of Police Jerry Dyer.
Priscilla Martinez spoke to the man just before the crash, she was on her way home to grab the victim a sweater because he was cold.
“It’s just sad. I do feel sad cause he was in a wheelchair man. I’m just praying,” Martinez said.
The driver remained on scene and will not face any criminal charges.
The name of the victim hasn’t been released.
