Man killed in Los Banos officer-involved shooting

LOS BANOS, California - A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Los Banos.

The shooting happened around noon in the area of 7th and G street.

A landscaper and a city employee came across a man with a handgun near the community center and called police.

When officers arrived they say the man became uncooperative and didn't follow their commands. The man then told officers he was armed and continued to not follow their directions.

"Suddenly the man lifts up shirt with one hand and retrieved the handgun with his other hand on his waistline, in response to that one officer fired one round striking him in the abdomen," said Los Banos police chief Gary Brizzee.

The man was then transported to a local hospital but later died. Police have not yet released his identity. There is no word yet if drugs or alcohol were involved.

The two officers involved will be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
