‘He was a great kid, he loved life’: Family remembers 10-year-old killed in Fresno hit and run

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE) – Following the death of 10-year-old Angel Hernandez in a hit-and-run near Fresno’s Woodward Park Thursday night, his family described him as someone with a big heart.

“He was a great kid, he loved life,” said Angel’s aunt Tina, “and he meant a lot to us all.”

62-year-old Raymond Jay Celaya is suspected to be the driver in the hit-and-run. He was arrested Friday morning and booked on felony hit-and-run and felony vehicular manslaughter charges. Police say he was driving the car that ran a red light on Friant at Fort Washington – and struck Angel as he was walking across the street.

Friday afternoon, family members set up a memorial for Angel at the crash site.

“You knew you hit something, whether it was a human being or whatever it was. You should’ve stopped, and you became a punk. You fled, and you left my nephew dead,” said Tina.

At a memorial later that evening, Angel’s grandmother says she couldn’t feel anything.

“I lost my grandchild,” said Irma Sigala. “I was hoping and praying that he was still holding on.”

She described Angel as a loving and innocent child, who was willing to help anyone and everybody.

“That is a 10-year-old child we are talking about. We are asking for justice for this person. For Angel.”

A witness to the hit-and-run, Luis Guzman, said his heart dropped when he saw the crash.

“My body dropped because it was so unreal. My first reaction was where is that car going?”

The suspect’s vehicle was found when a neighbor who lives in the same apartment complex as the suspect spotted a car matching the witness description near Emerson and Swift and called the police.

“I’m happy somebody found it,” said the neighbor. “It just hit me right away, and like my heart dropped. I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s the car right there.'”
