Get help before it’s too late, authorities and domestic violence experts say

Local News

A respected Fresno County Sheriff’s Deputy is accused of a brutal crime. Deputy David Raquenio was arrested and charged with felony domestic violence Monday by Clovis Police. He bailed out of jail hours after his arrest.

In light of the arrest, Clovis Police and domestic violence experts say it serves as a reminder to get help when you feel threatened.

Sgt. Jim Munro said it started with a call to dispatch Monday night. It prompted several Clovis Police officers to drive to Raquenio’s home in the Harlan Ranch area.

“Our officers began investigating and after their investigation was complete they determined a crime had occurred,” said Munro.

Raquenio last made headlines in 2016 when he was awarded with the Top Cop award by the Exchange Club of Fresno for saving a car crash victim’s life. He’s been with the sheriff’s office since 2000.

Sonia Medina Pranger, who teaches Studies in Domestic Violence at Fresno Pacific University, said in Fresno County there are a number of resources that are ready-to-go for those in need — like the Marjaree Mason Center and Centro La Familia.

Pranger adds, for those services to continue to provide, people need to support them.

“Victims often feel re-victimized when they go to services and they have these faulty messages about domestic violence. What is helpful is supporting [organizations] to provide resources,” said Pranger.

Munro said Clovis, like many other communities in the Central Valley, deal with domestic violence on a daily basis.

“If we ever got to a point where we did not have to deal with it, that would be a great thing,” said Munro.
