Fresno City Council Member Esmeralda Soria announces congressional run

Local News

FRESNO, California – Fresno City Council Member Esmeralda Soria announced her run for Congress Thursday night on Facebook.

She hopes to win the seat against the nearly 15-year incumbent, Rep. Jim Costa, who represents California’s 16th congressional district.

Soria and Costa are both Democrats.

“I am humbled by the overwhelming local support, as I stand up and step up for my family and community. Our families need a Congress that works for us, not corporations. Too many of us have followed the rules, worked hard, graduated from college and yet are struggling to get by,” she says in part on her post.

Soria says she plans to rebuild the middle class, fight for healthcare access, and ensure college accessibility.
