Five-year-old bear investigates a bear-proof trash can in Yosemite National Park

Local News

A 5-year-old black bear is seen on video captured by a park ranger investigating a bear-proof trash can in Yosemite National Park Sunday.

The park used the video to inform park-goers that the large, fuzzy creatures are active not only during summer, but winter time, too.

“Help protect bears by always storing your food properly and picking up litter,” park officials ask of visitors.

The bear is also seen wearing a collar, and the park explains, “He started seeking food in developed areas and showing no fear of people. He was given an ear tag and GPS collar so rangers could try to keep him from getting more acclimated. It also has a radio transmitter, which alerts us when he enters a picnic area or campground.”
