DUI driver arrested after hitting three cars, then flees, CHP says

Local News

Update –  CHP said that Julio Elenes was driving a pickup truck and was traveling westbound on State Route 180 east of Academy Avenue in the rain when he lost control and crossed into the 40 foot center median continuing to travel into the eastbound lanes.  The CHP said Julio Elenes was arrested for DUI and felony hit and run.

A possible DUI driver collided into three cars in Sanger Saturday night on Highway 180, and then fled the scene.

It happened just before 8:30 p.m. near Academy Avenue and Highway 180, according to California Highway Patrol spokesperson Vic Taylor.

He says a Hispanic male, 22, was driving westbound on Highway 180 when for unknown reasons, he crossed over into eastbound traffic and crashed into three other cars.

Taylor says the victims have moderate injuries.

As for the suspect, he fled the scene on foot, but was caught by officers about two miles away from the crash, Taylor confirms.

He will be booked into Fresno County Jail on suspicion of felony DUI, according to Taylor.

The nearly 10 mile stretch between Fresno and Sanger has proven dangerous recently, with several crashes, some deadly.

About a week ago, a reckless driver caused a seven-car crash, injuring several families, on Highway 180 and De Wolf, just a few miles from Academy Avenue.

On Feb. 4, a Fresno Police officer was killed by a suspected DUI driver while on his way home on Highway 180 near McCall Avenue.
