The Fresno Police Department is warning of a personal identity scam by a recorded voice, claiming they’re a department employee.

The department has received several calls from citizens Saturday regarding a recorded male voice, identifying themselves as a department employee, and to urgently contact them at another number to resolve an unspecified matter.

When returning these calls, the recorded message attempted to obtain personal information from the caller, says Lt. Larry Bowlan with the Fresno Police Department.

Bowlan explains that this is not at all common practice by department employees.

The Fresno Police Department would like to remind the public that we do not make unsolicited calls to the citizens of Fresno to obtain anyone’s personal information. It is always a good practice to not provide any personal information over the phone, before verifying who the caller is you’re speaking too. If anyone in the public receives a call of this nature they can call the Fresno Police Department at 621-7000.
