Clovis Unified students going on to join the armed forces after graduation were celebrated Wednesday.

The third annual Patriot’s Dinner took place at the Clovis Veterans Memorial District to honor the seniors who have either enlisted to serve, are enrolled in ROTC programs or military academies

“I come from a family where there have been quite a few people in the Army and the Marine Corps and it’s always getting welcomed into the next branch of the family that goes into the military,” says Clovis High School senior Sean Douglas McDonough.

He was accepted into the US Naval Academy in Maryland.

More than 50 students were celebrated for choosing to selflessly serve our country.

Along with McDonough, Katherine Mendyk from Clovis West High School, is also going into the US Naval Academy in Maryland.

She says she appreciates recognition the event gives because there are academic or athletic dinners, but this one is special to what she chose to do with her life.

Mendyk chose to serve instead of accepting a spot at the prestigious college MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

“I think dedicating your life to service is in a way greater than any of those,” she said of other career paths.
