The California Highway Patrol is investigating a traffic crash that left one person in serious condition Wednesday.

Just after 5:30 a.m., officers received a report of a crash on Highway 198, east of Avenal. When officers arrived, they learned a stolen 2004 Dodge Durango driven by an unknown driver was traveling eastbound on the highway and crossed over, becoming a wrong-way driver.

Javier Rodriguez Gaytan, 40, was driving in a 2005 Toyota westbound when the driver collided into the right side of his car.

The unknown driver’s car overturned and came to rest on its right side in a dirt field. Gaytan’s car ended up in a dirt shoulder and he was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno with major injuries.

“The driver of the Dodge immediately fled the scene on foot after the collision. An extensive search of the area was conducted which yielded negative results,” CHP explains.

This collision is still under investigation and it is unknown whether drugs and/or alcohol were a factor.
