FRESNO, California (KSEE/KGPE) – Eight apartments and eight vehicles were completely destroyed in a fire that burned near Fresno State on Sunday.

Firefighters battled the three-alarm apartment fire which broke out just after 7 p.m. at Shaw and Backer avenues.

Fresno Fire Department officials say the fire started in a dumpster that was underneath a wooden carport area and spread to the units at the Maplewood Apartments.

There were eight units and eight vehicles that were a “total loss.” There were 14 apartments in all that were affected by the fire and 10 vehicles.

The Fire Department estimated that there was about $2.5 million in damage, and that’s not including residents’ possessions in the apartments.
