Quadruple murder suspect Kori Ali Muhammad made his first appearance in court on Friday morning. It had been more than a week since he allegedly shot and killed a security guard at the Motel 6 on Blackstone and Ashlan. And, it had been three days since he allegedly shot and killed three men in Downtown Fresno for being white.

Muhammad walked into Department 30 and began yelling, “Let black people go in reparations!” He yelled that same phrase at least three more times.

Judge W. Kent Hamlin did not allow the media to shoot any images of Muhammad in court. Muhammad was wearing a yellow jumpsuit, he was handcuffed, and he kept his eyes down low for most of the proceedings. It was a very quick and concise time in court.

Muhammad’s public defender told Hamlin that he does not believe Muhammad is competent to proceed, and he wanted to have Muhammad mentall evaluated. Hamlin agreed, but not before Muhammad let out another outburst.

“Let black people go in reparations!” screamed Muhammad.

Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp was in court, but did not speak.

Muhammad’s mental evaluation report is due back to the court on May 9th, and his arraignment has been continued to May 12th. His bail has been set to more than $2.6 million dollars.
