The Lemoore-based fighter pilot involved in the crash near China Lake on Wednesday has been confirmed dead, the U.S. Navy said Thursday.

“Navy has confirmed that the pilot of the FA-18E died in the crash. In accordance with DoD policy, the identity of the pilot will be withheld 24 hours. The Navy mourns the loss of one of our own and our thoughts go out to the family and friends affected by this tragedy,” the Navy said in a statement.

The Navy said a single-seater F/A-18E Super Hornet crashed in Inyo County at 10 a.m.

Search and rescue teams from multiple agencies continued searching for the missing pilot late Wednesday night.

It’s not clear if the pilot ejected from the plane before the crash.
