Kids eat free with summer meal program

News

School is just days away from letting out for the summer many kids might not get the food they need.  Some Valley schools and other locations are offering free meal programs to local kids.

The California School Based Health Alliance is getting the word out about the USDA’s summer meals program offered by Fresno and Clovis Unified School Districts to make sure no child goes hungry.

Finding a location is easy, all you need to do is send a text.

“It’s real convenient, calling around or waiting for a newspaper ad sometimes takes too long,” Steven Gonzales, a parent, said.

Convenient is right. According to the Dairy Council of California, nearly 2 million California children are at risk of going hungry over the summer without access to school meals.

Gonzales said has four kids and summer months can be hard to the family’s monthly food bill. He said free meal programs are helpful to anyone.

“I think the free meals is perfect, it’s less stress off the parent and less stress off the child,” Gonzales said.

All you have to do is text the word FOOD to 877-877. It’ll ask for your zip code and then provide you with the nearest locations with free meals.

For Spanish, text COMIDA.

Some of those locations will be offered through Fresno and Clovis Unified School Districts, for kids ages 1 to 18.

“You’re getting a free breakfast and lunch and you can come dine and get a full balance meal. you’re getting a fruit and a vegetable a grain and a protein and milk is also available as well,” Tawnie Kroll, Clovis Unified School District.
