Investigators using surveillance, DNA testing to find mother who allegedly abandoned baby

Madera County Sheriff’s Office officials said they’re getting closer to identifying the woman who allegedly abandoned her baby on a county roadway.

The sheriff’s office released surveillance video Friday of the Feb 11 incident.

It happened on Avenue 13 1/2. There’s still an “X” in the road where authorities said the a woman left her baby. But Undersheriff Tyson Pogue said that’s not all she left behind.

“Detectives during their initial investigation and follow up investigation were able to recover some items that we believe contain evidence of DNA,” he said.

The sheriff’s office is not releasing specifics of what was found, but believe it will lead them to the mother.

“We are processing those items through the Department of Justice and through our other means to recover DNA profiles,” Pogue said.

A neighboring camera also caught the act. Pogue said it shows the woman pass by, then backtrack to a man out walking.

She asks him to take the child and he directs her to safe surrender sites and leaves.

That’s when Pogue said she abandons the baby.

Now the sheriff’s office has a message for anyone involved. “Do come forward. It’s just a matter of time until we are able to make contact with them. We do believe that there are two sides to every story and we’d really like to hear what the circumstances were,” Pogue said.

He said the baby is doing well and has been released from the hospital and placed with a foster family.
