Officials at the Kern Valley State Prison are investigating a shooting of an inmate at a maximum-security prison recreation yard.
Officials said on Monday, April 29 at approximately 10:46 a.m., four inmates battered the fifth inmate with stabbing weapons on the Facility B yard. Officers responded to the fight and gave orders to stop.
Prison officials said the assailants did not comply, which required multiple chemical agents and less-lethal rounds.
According to the California Department of Corrections, the inmates continued their attack on the fifth, at which time an officer fired one round from a Mini-14 rifle. One of the inmates suffered a gunshot wound.
Three of the inmates, including the victim of the attack, were transported to area hospitals.
Their condition is not known at this time. No staff injuries were reported.
Prison officials said they are investigating the use of deadly force.
