A husky puppy is lucky to be alive after her mother bit her paw off and the dog did not get her proper medical care.
Willow was just two weeks old when it happened. Mell Garcia, founder of Fresno based rescue Mell’s Mutts stepped up to help.
Garcia said a lot of times unlicensed breeders don’t care enough to help their animals and are not willing to put up money for proper care.
Garcia said the owner reached out for help on social media.
“The person that had her wasn’t willing to put in the money to help her, so they posted on Facebook for help,” Garcia said.
The rescue stepped up spending thousands of dollars on surgery. The vet was not even sure Willow would survive.
“The infection had traveled and if she didn’t have it removed at that point there was a very good chance she was going to die,” Garcia said.
Willow bounced back but Garcia said she’s lucky and said unlicensed breeders need to be stopped.
“It’s the dog, it’s the puppies that are suffering, because they’re sitting there like she did for over a week with literally a leg that was rotting off,” she said.
Willow is now up for adoption.
“As of right now she’s perfectly healthy. She’s got a clean bill of health she’s a typical puppy with a lot of energy,” Garcia said.
Mell’s Mutts operates completely off donations, and medical care is very expensive. Anyone who would like to help or is interested in adopting Willow can reach out to Garcia at Mellsmutts@yahoo.com or through their Facebook page:
