It’s a story you first saw on Eyewitness News. A young mother is recovering after being shot accidentally by her upstairs neighbor and we’re hearing for the first time from the gun owner who fired the shot.
Investigators say a man was handling the gun when it accidentally went off at an apartment in southeast Fresno. The bullet went through the floor hitting the woman in the foot as she was holding her 2-month-old baby.
“I was stupid. I thought it was empty, so I decided to aim it face down toward my bed it fired and then I realized oh no what I’ve done,” the gun owner said.
In order to get the gun owner’s side of the story we agreed to protect his identity.
“I don’t want people to think I did something and that I’m going to run away from it. I want to take responsibility for my actions,” the gun owner said.
Those actions left a bullet hole in his neighbor’s ceiling. That bullet his Pingnhia Yang in the foot as she held her 2-month-old child.
“That shot could’ve been me, my husband, or my baby that I’m holding,” said Yang.
Yang is expected to fully recover and her neighbor continues to ask for forgiveness.
“I should’ve known better. It could’ve hit her and her child. It’s going to give me nightmares until I can get rid of that evil thought from my head,” said the gun owner.
The Fresno Police Department is still investigating this shooting. At this point no charges have been filed. The gun was legally owned in this case.
