Governor Gavin Newsom slams Pacific Gas and Electric following planned outages, accusing them of greed and mismanagement

FRESNO, California (KGPE) – Hundreds of thousands of Californians are still in the dark after PG&E cut power as a precaution to prevent wildfires.

Thursday, Governor Gavin Newsom lashed out against the utility company but the governor isn’t the only one on the attack, several PG&E employees have also faced physical altercations while out on the job.

“I do apologize for the hardships this has caused but I do believe we made the right call on safety,” said PG&E President Bill Johnson.

The shut off fueled anger from the thousands left in the dark.

“We’ve had employees shot at, punched…” said Johnson.

The company admits they dropped the ball when it came to communicating with their customers during the first-ever widespread shut off. Their website crashed, outage maps were inaccurate and call centers overloaded.

“To put it simply, we were not adequately prepared to support the operational event,” said Johnson.

Governor Gavin Newsom slammed the company accusing them of greed and mismanagement, saying the weather conditions are nothing new to the state and they should have their equipment updated to handle the conditions.

“What has occurred in the past 24 hours is unacceptable, what has occurred in the past 24 hours are kids staying home from school, parents that can’t bathe their kids, parents coming home from work who can’t even get inside their garage,” said Newsom.

The company is now moving from shutting off the lights to turning them on. The reboot process requires 25,000 lines to be inspected first, meaning it could be days for some Californians before the lights turn back on.
