Girl raises money to help replace police K-9 who apprehended suspect in murder of Nick Kauls

Local News

FRESNO, California (KSEE/KGPE) – CBS47 Eyewitness News was there when K-9 Faris helped arrest Joseph Espinoza who was wanted in the murder of teen Nick Kauls.

One of Nick’s friends learned that Faris had to retire this summer after he was injured on the job.

“… and I came up with the idea to raise money to replace the dog – Faris,” said Bailey Feeney, friend of Nick Kauls.

Bailey did some research and learned that it costs around $13,000 to purchase and train a new police dog.

She received a starter donation of $6,500 – half the amount needed.

She’s put up fliers at school and has posted the fundraiser to social media.

“By spreading it on social media, tons of people across the country have come forward and offered to donate,” Bailey said. “And people at the school have seen it and offered what they can do to help to raise the money.”

Bailey says she’s gotten support from the principal at San Joaquin Memorial High School for the fundraiser.

It’s part of a campaign to treat others with kindness.

“It’s basically doing acts of kindness in memory of Nick Kauls, so this fundraiser is a big act of kindness in memory of Nick,” Bailey said.

Her goal is to have the money raised by Thanksgiving to purchase a new dog.

“We’re hoping for it to be a Christmas present to the Police Department,” she said.

If you’d like to make a donation to the Nick Kauls Memorial K-9 Fund, you can do so at Bank of the Sierra on Palm Avenue in Fresno.
