Hundreds of people came out to remember and celebrate Gavin Gladding – one week after he was hit and killed by a car. Gladding’s memorial service was held on Monday morning at the Peoples Church in Northeast Fresno. Gladding was a long-time educator for the Clovis Unified School District, and most currently, he was the vice principal at Fort Washington Elementary.
“The family is devastated obviously, but we’re happy to host the community being here,” said Larry Powell, one of the pastors at the church.
Power said it doesn’t surprise him that so many people came to remember a man who was loved so dearly.
Gladding’s college friend Andy Hammond said, “Just feel very honored and lucky to have known him, and obviously we’re celebrating his life today, so, just an amazing person all around, thru and thru.”
Hammond expressed how Gladding will be remembered for the educational role he played in many students’ lives.
“He affected, positively affected, so many people’s lives, friends, family, through his role in education. He’ll live on just through all the great work he did educating,” said Hammond.
Samantha Giannetta had Gladding as a teacher while at Clovis West High School.
Giannetta said, “I think that was one of the most important things that like stuck with me, and like being here today, remembering everything about what he did for his students, was that he was always there for us as humans first.”
The memorial service was filled with fond memories of Gladding – many involving his wife and two children. There were tears of joy, and sadness, as many still struggle with his untimely death.
