FRESNO, California (KSEE) – Fresno County regained the top spot for the number one Agriculture producing county in the nation: the top three exports were almonds, pistachios, and grapes.

CEO of the Fresno County Farm Bureau Ryan Jacobsen credits the win to garlic and onions.

“One thing that really stood out is we had a couple of big risers on the top ten list and that included garlic and onions,” said Jacobsen. “So, believe it or not, it was probably garlic and onions that put us over the top for being number one this year.”

Jacobsen said Fresno County produces more garlic than Gilroy. However, the dominating crops were almonds, grapes, and pistachios.

It comes at a time when pistachio exports at an all-time high. Richard Matoian with American Pistachio Growers said in the past five years their sales have skyrocketed.

“2018 was our record year for productions for pistachios not only in Fresno County but also in the entire state of California,” said Matoian.

Overall California produces one-third of the nation’s vegetables and more than half of the nation’s nuts.

“One of the amazing things is, no matter who is number one, the fact is that we have the top three counties touching one another, and when it comes to the top ten counties in the United States nine of those are here in California,” said Jacobsen.
