A surge in violence prompted a major gang sweep last week by local law enforcement, that led to the seizure of handguns that had been dangerously and illegally modified.
Fresno Police Chief says a surge in violence, specifically four shootings in Northwest Fresno on May 19th involving gang members prompted the law enforcement crackdown.
Two special response teams from the Fresno Police Department worked in tandem with “MAGEC” and the Department Of Homeland Security to carry out a number of raids at gang hangouts.
The raids led to dozens of arrests, including 37 active gang members. But they also led to something more disturbing. Handguns that could give criminals the upper hand in an armed confrontation with Police officers.
“You can see on this firearm that there is a fully automatic Glock conversion kit. When this device is inserted into the back of this Glock it becomes a fully automatic weapon”. Chief Jerry Dyer held up the modified handgun with an extended clip during a press conference. “And unfortunately these devices can be easily obtained on the internet and for a very low price and this device can be quickly assembled to make it a fully automatic weapon”, said Dyer.
Another handgun with an extended clip had also been modified to avoid detection when used, and to evade Fresno’s Shot Spotter gunfire detection system. ” It also has a suppressor on the end of this firearm that’s intended to reduce the noise of that gun being fired”, Dyer said as he held up the second firearm.
The Chief says that officers are finding more and more Glocks that have been modified to be fully automatic while arresting gang members. The federal government is working to track sales of the Glock modification mechanisms so they can arrest those who purchase them illegally over the internet.
Fresno’s murder rate is up year to year by 25%. At this time last year the city had seen 15 homicides, so far in 2019 there have been 20,
