Eyewitness News has confirmed that a Fresno police officer was the victim, killed by a wrong-way driver on Highway 180 and McCall near Sanger Monday night.
The officer’s name has not been released.
The wrong-way driver also died at the scene and several other people were injured. Officials are still trying to figure out what led up to the incident, and why the driver was going the wrong way.
Police said it happened around 5 p.m. on Highway 180 near McCall. They said they had received a call of someone driving the wrong way shortly before, but before officers could get to the driver he was already involved in the fatal crash.
“The vehicle hit approximately five cars before hitting the last car, which they went head on with,” Sgt. Joseph Bianchi of the CHP said. “As a result of that last collision both the wrong way driver and the last driver succumb to their injuries at the scene,” he said.
First responders said several others were also injured.
“Three to four additional patients were treated and transported from the scene,” Seth Brown with Fresno County Fire said.
The seven car collision diverted traffic on westbound Highway 180 for hours as crews worked to clear the roadways.
“Some of the vehicles had very minor damage and some of the vehicles had major damage,” Brown said.
Officers are not yet identifying the victims, but said that both men who were killed were alone in their vehicles and were wearing their seat belts.
Investigators said it’s too early to know if drugs or alcohol were involved.
