A deadly coincidence Fresno Police say two men are dead after two unrelated shootings happened over the weekend.
The first shooting happened around 3:30 Saturday morning.
Police say 24-year-old Kalen Borchardt was found shot in a parking lot at an apartment complex, near Highway 99 and Parkway Drive.
Police say homicide detectives are investigating.
“What they have learned so far is there was some sort of an agreement to meet, meet up with an individual, however during that meet disturbance that obviously turned deadly,” says Lt. Dave Madrigal with the Fresno Police Department.
It’s unclear as to why Borchardt was meeting at this apartment complex, but police say they have identified a group of individuals that they are focused on and are investigating what their involvement is in this case.
The second murder happened around 4 o’clock Sunday morning.
Police say 23 year-old Justin Garza was found in his car in the Motel 6 parking lot on Blackstone, near Griffith.
Surveillance video shows a suspect getting out of what appears to be a van, walk up to the victim and fire a shot.
Police say when officers arrived they found 23-year-old Justin Garza suffering from a gun shot wound in his car.
“What we learned from that is the victim was attempting to meet up with a potential suspect and it was over a debt collection,” says Madrigal.
Police say that Garza was the one trying to collect a significant about of money from a suspect but ended up being shot.
Police say they have identified a person of interest who is in custody but police say it’s not related to this case.
“He’s currently in custody on a probation violation,” says Madrigal.
Police say these two shootings mark murders No. 7 and 8 in the City of Fresno.
