FRESNO, California – Gary Roush of Fresno paid tribute to his goddaughter, Tara O’Sullivan, at a funeral service in Sacramento shortly after she was killed June 19th.
She was shot while responding to a stand off situation, something he never thought would happen.
“Sort of terror, sadness,” he says, “everything, all of the bad things you could think of went through my mind.”
Roush remembers his goddaughter as an upbeat and loving person.
She has been involved in law enforcement for years, but he says she graduated from the academy about six months ago and joined the Sacramento Police Department.
He says she loved her job, but there was something else she loved as well.
“She had this one dog when she was young, Mojo, if that dog was around she was on it,” he says.
Roush knew at her funeral that he wanted to do more to remember her.
“Always loved dogs, always wanted to be a police officer, so putting those together funding a police dog was a logical approach.”
Roush set up a “GoFundMe” to raise money for a police K9 for the Sacramento Police Department.
He needs $20,000 for the K9.
“The guys at Sacramento PD have been very helpful and communicative answering our questions and they will be very involved,” he says.
Roush says O’Sullivan’s family is happy with this tribute, he even hopes the new K9 can be named Tara in her honor.
“It combines two of the most important things in her life, she loved.”
