Fresno jail shooting featured on national crime show

News

A Fresno shooting was featured on a national true-crime show.

The latest episode of Body Cam on Investigation Discovery told the story of Juanita Davila and Toamalama Scanlan.

The two correction officers who were shot at the Fresno County Jail in 2016 by Thong Vang, a man who was high on meth.

The show featured security footage from inside as well as interviews with those involved.

“I was trying to get ahold of his arm, we struggled and then I saw a gun,” Davila said. She recalled being shot point blank in the jaw.

Lee Copeland, one of Scanlan’s best friends, recalled the call he received shortly after the gunfire.

“She said we had an active shooter down here today and Malama got shot and we headed down to the hospital,” he said Tuesday.

Scanlan was shot in the head. He’s been in hospitals from California to Texas since. Copeland said friends and family are looking forward to the episode, but know it will be emotional.

“Seeing it all go down is going to be really heartbreaking,” Copeland said.

He said the support and prayers for Scanlan and his family are working. “Just keep the faith, he’s going to come out of it,” he said. The next goal is getting Scanlan home.

Right now Scanlan is in a hospital in Southern California, Copeland said he’s responding well to new treatment and thinks this is going to be a good year.
