Fresno Fire Department rebuild fence for grieving woman

FRESNO, California.- Fresno Firefighters spent their Saturday fixing up the fence of woman who couldn’t afford repairs after a fire destroyed it last Friday.

The crew decided to pass along the good deed after seeing how heartbroken and financially burdened Carole Dzerigian was.

Dzerigian was in tears once she saw the finished product.

“It is beautiful,” she said.

The new wood fence looks very different from the burnt wood and chainlink fence piled up on Saturday morning.

One thing after another seemed to be going wrong for Dzerigian. First, her husband passed last year, then due to her struggles financially she couldn’t pay her heat or water bill, and after the fire, she said homeless started camping in her backyard.

“I was devastated,” Dzerigian said. “I was just like ‘oh no not this.”

That luck turned around earlier this week when the firefighters knocked on the door saying they would be back in a couple of days not only to clean the mess up but build her a new fence.

“I was like oh my goodness, and I hugged their necks. I couldn’t even speak,” said Dzerigian.

Firefighter Peter Dodson, who owns a construction business on the side, and several others from the fire department got together equipment and headed to her house. They worked all day until the final product was finished.

For Dodson, the hard work was worth it to see the expression on Dzerigian’s reaction.

“That is what it is all about,” said Dodson. “To see the joy on her face and the happiness and the joy she has for this. “

“I am overjoyed for her,” said neighbor and close friend Rebecca Lopez Body. “I cannot express any other words. Just speechless.”

On top of getting a new fence, the Fresno Fire Department also gave Dzerigian money to pay for her water bill to ease more of her financial burden.
