A retired NBA star is hoping to save and change a young boy’s life.

NBA Hall of Famer, Dikembe Mutombo, met 8-year-old Matadi at the airport in Los Angeles Wednesday. Matadi is from the Congo but Mutombo flew the little boy to California for medical treatment.

He has a tumor growing on the left side of his face. Mutombo says the little boy’s community has rejected him because of his face.

So Mutombo is stepping in and helping, the basketball star’s foundation sponsored his trip to LA.

Doctors at the Osborne Head and Neck Foundation are performing the surgery for free.

“He is suffering from a life-threatening illness and we are here to help this little boy and Mr. Mutombo’s foundation save this little boy’s life,” said Dave Dell with the foundation.

“Right now, we want to improve the living condition of the people in Congo where the mortality rate is 45 for men and 47 for women,” said for NBA star Dikembe Mutombo.

After his surgery Matadi will stay with his father at the Ronald Mcdonald House free of charge during his recovery.
