The former student body president of Fresno City College has been sentenced to one year in jail. 25-year-old Christopher Washington was arrested back in October.

CBS 47/KSEE 24 legal analyst David Mugridge says Washington may serve another six months after pleading no contest to the felony count of dissuading a witness. But just three months ago police say Washington and two female students were drunk and locked in a bathroom stall.

Washington was usually sitting at the head of the table as student body president of Fresno City College. Now he’s wearing a red jumpsuit as he serves a one-year sentence in Fresno County Jail.

“There’s no question at this point for Mr. Washington to walk away with what he got, is kind of a late Christmas present,” said Mugridge.

A gift according to legal analyst David Mugridge. At one point Washington faced the allegation of a sex crime, providing alcohol to a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Those charges dismissed last month. Washington did plead no contest to dissuading a witness. Once released, he’ll be on probation for five years and be in a sex offender treatment program for 52 weeks.

“When you add into that the fact that he will not be having to register as a sex offender because that’s something that would carry with him throughout his life,” said Mugridge.

Campus police say Washington was found with two female students inside a locked bathroom stall at Fresno City College in October. Washington, a 17-year-old and 18-year-old were all reportedly intoxicated. Washington is not allowed to contact the adult woman for five years.

Criminal defense attorney Michael McNeely says the minor who was arrested in connection to Washington is his client. McNeely says the teen had never met Washington prior to the bathroom incident and tells me she’s not a suspect but a victim.

“My 17 year-old client’s life has been turned upside down by the actions of Christopher Washington. Even now she is battling in juvenile court to clear her name. She wants nothing more than to return to college and put this behind her,” said McNeely in a statement.

We did reach out to Fresno City College for a statement on Washington’s sentencing. Officials had no comment.
