Fires shut down a stretch of Highway 180 near Squaw Valley

Multiple grass fires shut down a section of Highway 180 Sunday night close to Squaw Valley.

Multiple reports of grass fires burning near Highways 180 and 63 came in around 6 p.m., according to Cal Fire.

The fires have Highway 180 closed from Cove Road to Ruth Mills Road.

In total, 70 acres burned. The biggest fire involved is now 65 acres big and as of 10:30 p.m. the forward progress of the fire has stopped. Also at that time, the fire was reported to be 10-percent contained.

Capt. Jeremiah Wittwer said the heat and wind made things difficult for fire crews.

However, Cal Fire was able to call in air units to assist just in time before cut-off time. It made things easier, according to Wittwer.

“Having those resources right before cut-off definitely helped slow the progress of this fire,” he said.

The Highway 180 closure will be in effect until Monday morning at least.

If it does reopen by then, it will either only have one lane open or traffic will he controlled.
