Firefighters investigate house fire at vacant home

Firefighters in the North Valley are trying to figure out how a blaze started inside a vacant home near Chowchilla.

The fire broke out around lunch time Sunday near Highway 152 and Road 14 1/2. Madera County Sheriff’s deputies were in the area on another call when one of them spotted the smoke.

He alerted the fire department. When firefighters arrived, about half of the home was on fire.

No one was inside and crews stopped the flames from spreading to nearby buildings.

“At this point, the house is a total loss. There’s nothing of value to really salvage,” said Neil Tito, a Cal Fire Engineer.

Chowchilla Fire Department also responded to help put out the flames.

No word yet on the cause.
