A fire ripped through an office complex near Fashion Fair Mall Monday evening. Firefighters had to call in backup to battle the flames.
Fire officials said it started just after 6 p.m. near First and Gettysburg in Fresno. First Street was shut down for a few hours but has since reopened.
An orange glow lit up the night sky from a massive inferno at an office complex on North First Street by Fashion Fair Mall.
“I’ve never seen this in person,” said Bryan Beltran, a witness. “It’s kinda shocking. I used to work in that building.”
Spectators watched and recorded cell phone video as firefighters battled the flames from high up on ladders.
A bystander called it in just after 6 p.m. The smoke could be seen from miles away.
“We saw smoke and it wasn’t as big at first, but then we heard it explode,” said witness Steven Martinez Jr.
Witness Quiana Bermudez said “They were about half way up toward the tree. You can see two of these trees have no more leaves and it’s really burnt off.”
Firefighters couldn’t say what type of offices were destroyed, but they say they stopped the flames from spreading to another office complex to the north.
Spectators say they’re relieved no one was inside.
“I was honestly terrified because I didn’t know if people were in there or not,” said witness Joshua Moffat. “I didn’t want people to get hurt, I was just terrified.”
Firefighters said accessing the fire was difficult because First Street was so busy with traffic.
No word on the cause or damages.
