FRESNO, Calif. — A man is in critical condition after an apartment fire at a Fresno assisted living home.
Fire crews said it happened just before 6 p.m. on Monday at the Glen Agnes apartments on Flora Dora and Fruit.
“When initial crews arrived on scene, they made entrance into the apartment and what they found was a solo occupant,” Brian Price, Fresno Fire Battalion Chief.
They said upon arrival, all other residents inside had been evacuated and the fire was contained thanks to the sprinkler system.
“The sprinkler system is really what gave us a huge advantage in making sure other occupants were safe,” said Price.
Fire officials said the victim was found on a bed and not awake. He was then transported to the hospital in critical condition with burns.
“I understand his legs were burnt really badly,” said Myrna Dillon, resident. Myrna Dillon lives next door to the unit where the fire happened.
“I was outside and everyone started coming out and they said there was a fire down there. I thought that it has got to be Bill cause he smokes in bed all the time,” said Dillon.
Dillon’s apartment along with four others sustained water damage due to the sprinkler activation.
Fire officials said those displaced will stay in other units in the apartment building for the time being.
Fire crews said the apartment unit where the fire started sustained more than $40,000 in damages.
The fire cause is still under investigation.
