Clovis Unified staff gear up for school year

CLOVIS, California - Clovis Unified School District officials are gearing up to start school next week.

Thousands of faculty members gathered at the Save Mart Center Tuesday for a back to school rally called General Session.

"General Session for Clovis Unified is a long history of building culture, our togetherness we are a large district," says Public Information Officer Kelly Avants.

Kelly Avants says Clovis is the 15th biggest district in the state, she says they are growing fast.

"We were 16th last year, and we are about 57 students according to the California Department of Education from being the 14th," says Avants, "so we are growing, we expect to  grow by about 250, 300 students this year."

She says the General Session is more important than ever to keep the community feel of Clovis Unified, something teachers agree with.

"General Session is one of the best things we do in our district, I love General Session it gets you pumped up for the school year." says administrator Monica Castillo.

Just like students see their friends, teachers say this makes them excited to see their coworkers and gets them ready to welcome the students.

"This is a way to bring us back to the right mindset back together as a family because we are all individuals, we are all different but we are better together," says Derrick Davis from Clovis East.
