Fresno Unified will host the sixth annual Dual Language Parent Conference on Saturday, March 17. The theme of the conference this year is “Celebrating our Children.”

The conference will feature keynote speakers Lupita Lomeli and Misty Her. Lomeli is the director of community empowerment at Univision in Fresno, and Her is an instructional superintendent. Both will speak on the value of bilingualism and biliteracy.

The conference will also offer a variety of workshops for parents targeting a range of grades.

“Our dual language programs continue to expand, providing an opportunity for even more of our students to be bilingual and bicultural. Learning multiple languages makes our students highly marketable as they head toward college and careers, and will expand their opportunities in the global economy,” said Superintendent Bob Nelson.

Fresno Unified offers dual language programs in Spanish at Ewing, Leavenworth, Rowell and Sunset elementary schools; Wawona School; Yosemite Middle School; and McLane High School. Next school year, the district will expand Spanish language programs to five more schools and will offer a Hmong language program at Vang Pao Elementary School.
