Dramatic helmet cam video shows firefighters battling blaze

FRESNO, California – Caught on camera, dramatic video of firefighters battling a Two-Alarm fire.

Investigators say the flames broke out on Monday, just before 6 p.m., near the corner E Street and Monterey Street.

Firefighters say this fire was full of challenges. Crews say they were force to take a defense stance after flames were shooting through the floor.

The explosive video was all caught on a Fresno Firefighter’s helmet camera.

It shows crews entering the home, heavy smoke billowing from the staircase, engulfing the entire house.

Crews worked fast to battle the blaze. Video shows the moment the front of the house collapsed.

Within minutes, firefighters say the flames moved from the basement of this house, into the walls and then directly into the attic, making it dangerous for crews.

“Some of these older homes, if there was a significant amount of fuel load as that fire started to develop to increase that heat and ultimately went up and got into the attic, but you know underneath the basement that it typically unprotected structural members that is underneath there which makes it a hazard for firefighters going inside,” says Capt. Robert Castillo with the Fresno Fire Department.

Neighbors even stepped in, taking action, helping to keep the flames at bay and away from their homes.

“I went on the roof and put water on the roof with the water hose,” says Jose Olivas, a neighbor.

Olivas, a father of four, has lived next door for 22 years. He was home with his children when he says his daughter noticed the fire. “I was scared for my kids, you know.”

Just feet away, the flames destroyed the 100-year-old home.

Investigators say three people were inside the home, but everyone got out safely. Crews say the house did not have any smoke alarms.

Firefighters say this is a reminder to always have a plan.

“Have that discussion with their family and their kids, in the event that there were a fire, what are we going to do?” Castillo expressed.

Firefighters believe the blaze started in the basement, but the cause is still under investigation.
