We continue our coverage of last week’s deadly shooting spree near Downtown Fresno. Suspect Kori Muhammad made a second appearance in court on Thursday.

The Fresno County District Attorney’s Office added eight more felony charges against Muhammad, including murders with special circumstance.

Muhammad’s public defender Eric Christensen said even he thinks his client has mental issues. This comes after Muhammad once again had several outbursts inside of the courtroom. Cameras were not allowed in court on Thursday, unlike last Friday when cameras captured audio of Muhammad going on a verbal tirade.

“Let black people go in reparations!” yelled Muhammad.

That outburst caused Judge W. Kent Hamlin to stop the proceedings. The same thing happened on Thursday.

Muhammad is facing charges of murder for allegedly shooting and killing a white security guard and three white men in Downtown Fresno. Muhammad has admitted to killing the men because of their race. Christensen talked about his client’s fitness for trial.

Christensen said, “But at this point, all we want to really know is what his state of mind is, and whether he’s competent to continue proceedings.”

Christensen has requested his client undergo a mental evaluation before his next arraignment on May 12th.

“Based on our conversations with him and all the other factors including his behavior in court, I think there’s significant mental issues. So, we’ll see how that pans out on the 12th,” ended Christensen.

Legal analyst Charles Magill said only time will tell whether Muhammad will be found competent for trial.

He said, “I think his antics in court are again, a call for attention. And I don’t think it’s going to help very well for the public defender that’s been appointed to him.”

Muhammad is also facing charges for shooting at a car and being a felon in possession of a gun. That gun is still missing, and Crime Stoppers has upped the reward to $2,000 for it’s return.
