Deadly, violent first weekend of Summer in Fresno

A violent weekend in the City of Fresno. 

So far this month, there of been a total of 23 shootings compared to 20 this same time last year. Fresno police hoping it’s not the beginning of a long and hot, violent summer. 

“Blown away and concerned that it was shooting after shooting after shooting after shooting,” said Gloria Loretta-Marshall of Fresno. 

The start of summer filled with violence in the city of Fresno sending shockwaves making residents nervous. 

“It just seems very aggressive,” Loretta-Marshall said. 

“I just couldn’t believe it,” said Manuel Velazquez of Fresno. 

A 10-month-old baby shot. A teenage girl killed. And more deadly gunfire at a birthday party. 

“We had three different incidents that were very high profile,” said Chief Jerry Dyer. 

On Thursday a 16-year-old was shot in Southeast Fresno she died two days later. Another person was shot in the same incident. Chief Dyer saying gang members exchanged the gunfire. 

“My fiancé has been a little worried lately,” said Velazquez. 

On Saturday, a 22-year-old was having his birthday party a few houses down from Velazquez’ home on Pico Avenue. It was interrupted by gang members who shot and killed a man shown on our crime map. 

“As far as people getting shot and losing their lives, that something new right here,” he said. 

And a 10-month-old shot was in the head early Sunday in a car. 

“That shocks the conscious of the community and it should,” Chief Dyer said. 

Little Fayth Percy is still alive in critical but stable condition. The suspect was arrested. 

Later Sunday, a double shooting rounded out a violent weekend in the Central Valley. 

Five of the shootings this past week involved gangs. The police department increasing their presence in impacted neighborhoods in the heat of summer. 

“Scared and concerned. Both. It just seems like it appears to be growing and growing,” Loretta-Marshall said. 

Fresno is murder rate is up… There were 24 murders this year compared to 17 during the same time last year.
