The Visalia Police Department on Monday released a photo of the suspect injured in Saturday’s officer-involved shooting.

He was identified as 22-year-old Roman Miguel Escarsega of Visalia.

Escarsega has two prior convictions for possession of a concealed dirk or dagger and is currently on probation, the Police Department said.

He remains in the hospital and is in stable condition.

On Saturday at 3:10 p.m., officers responded to the 500 block of south Velie in regards to a family disturbance.

It was reported that during the disturbance, a man was in possession of a handgun and fired multiple
rounds at the location and then left the area.

Several officers looking for this individual responded to the AM/PM. Arriving officers heard gunfire coming from the inside of the business, police said.

A man who was in possession of a firearm exited the store.

He fled southbound.

As officers chased the suspect, the suspect fired multiple rounds at the officers, police said. One officer returned fire, striking the suspect.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he is now in stable condition.

Investigators learned that the suspect who was reported at the disturbance on Velie who fired a handgun, then went to the AM/PM store where he then committed an armed robbery in which he fired multiple shots at clerks, police said.
