Video shows stolen ambulance suspect surrendering to Fresno Police

FRESNO, California – A viewer sent in video of a man who allegedly stole an American Ambulance on July 7 surrendering to Fresno Police.

It happened just before 10 p.m. in the 5200 block of East Lamona Avenue, when police say a paramedic reported he and his partner were on a call and left the keys inside of the van.

Shortly after they went into the home, Gilberto Martinez, 26, of Reedley knocked on the front door asking to use the phone.

When he was denied, he walked to the parked ambulance and started pulling on the door handles.

He got in through the unlocked driver side door and drove off with the ambulance southbound on Peach Avenue to Highway 180.

Martinez continued on at a slow speed when he exited the westbound Highway 180 offramp at Cedar Avenue.

When he saw police cars behind him, he pulled over and police say he followed directions given to him.

Martinez told police he took the ambulance because the “devil made him do it, and he was trying to get back to Reedley to see his wife and child.”

The stolen American Ambulance vehicle was returned the paramedics and Martinez was booked into the Fresno County Jail on suspicion of stealing an emergency vehicle.
