An investigation is underway after a suspect was shot and killed by a Sheriff’s deputy after a chase Thursday night, the Kings County Sheriff’s Office said.
Around 10 p.m., a deputy observed a vehicle that matched the description of a vehicle from a previously released Officer Safety bulletin from the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
The Deputy noticed the vehicle in the area of 19th Avenue and Highway 198 and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
The vehicle did not stop for the deputy, and the deputy — along with assistance from the Lemoore Police Department, the Avenal Police Department, and the California Highway Patrol ground and air units — pursued the vehicle.
The chase ended in the area west of Gayle Avenue and the Avenal Cutoff Road, and the suspect fled on foot from the vehicle, the Sheriff’s Office said.
After a ground search for close to an hour, the CHP aircraft located the suspect lying down in a field.
Deputies approached the suspect in order to take him into custody, but the suspect pointed a handgun at one of the deputies, the Sheriff’s Office said. Another deputy fired at the suspect hitting him in the upper part of his body.
The suspect died from his injuries.
No other information was immediately available.
