Suspect arrested in fatal Turning Point stabbing, police say

FRESNO, California – A suspect has been arrested in the fatal stabbing that happened at Turning Point near downtown Fresno last week, the Fresno Police Department said.

Matthew Chavez, 32, died from multiple stab wounds on Friday.

Police said Chavez was not a gang member and was not involved in any criminal activity during the attack. The attack appeared to be random.

Zyad Abdulaziz Alsaid was arrested in the homicide, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said Thursday.

Dyer said Alsaid claimed to have not been at Turning Point on Friday, but police say that’s untrue.

Alsaid is from Palestine and has been in the U.S. for 45 years.

Turning Point is a rehab center.

No other information on the arrest was immediately available.
