Step-mother takes daughter to motel to be assaulted by her boyfriend, deputies say

Crime

An alleged sexual assault is being investigated in Kings County after a juvenile reported her step-mother put her in harms way.

Just before noon Saturday, the juvenile reported to Kings County Sheriff’s deputies she was beaten and assaulted by her step-mother’s boyfriend at the Stardust Motel in Hanford.

“Deputies learned that the victim’s step-mother, Laurie Lutz, 45, had picked up the child from family members under false pretenses and taken her to the motel. Once at the motel the juvenile was beaten with a belt by Laurie’s boyfriend, Gregory Cantu, 29,” a sheriff’s office news release says.

She suffered minor injuries.

The sheriff’s office claims Cantu was left alone in the room with the girl, and he started making several sexual advances toward her, touching and kissing her against her will.

Cantu allegedly then threatened the girl and told her not to tell anyone.

She was able to convince Cantu to walk to a nearby store with her, and as they were walking, she escaped.

Cantu is known to deputies as a registered sex offender and they say he is on parole for a prior sex crime.

“When deputies attempted to contact (Cantu) at the motel he tried to flee out one of the room’s back windows. (Cantu) was ultimately taken into custody and booked into the Kings County Jail for the charges of child endangerment, lewd and lascivious act with a child under 14 and victim intimidation,” the news release explains.

Lutz, the girl’s step-mother was also arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of child endangerment.
