TURLOCK, California – An off-duty Merced County Sheriff’s deputy was shot over the weekend in Turlock, the Merced County Sheriff said Monday.

Around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Turlock Police officers responded to the 100 block of south First Street after receiving calls that someone had been shot.

Upon arrival, officers located a male victim that had suffered at least one gunshot wound. Officers provided medical aid to the victim until paramedics arrived and transported the him to a local area hospital in critical condition.

He is now in stable condition.

Sheriff Vern Warnke said Monday that the person who was shot was one of his deputies who was off-duty.

He’s expected to be OK.

The Turlock Police Department is handling the case.

Throughout the investigation, it has been determined that the suspect walked out of the business in the 100 block of south First Street and fired a weapon in the direction of the victim who was with three people outside.

The suspect left the scene prior to police arrival, in a grey sedan or SUV.

The suspect was described as a man about 40 years old, between 5-foot-10 to 6 feet tall, about 200 pounds, and was wearing a blue polo and blue jeans.
