The man shot and killed by officers after a long stand off near Fresno State on Saturday has been identified.

Police said Oliver Hernandez, 29, of Fresno, was visiting at his family’s apartment across the street from Fresno State near Ninth Street and Bulldog Lane when he locked himself in their restroom.

Family members told police he was acting “weird” during the visit.

That’s when he came out of the restroom holding a “battle axe” and started swinging it at family members, including children in the home.

The family was able to escape outside and call police, said Pat Farmer, acting Fresno Police chief.

After a more than six hour stand off, SWAT members broke open the door and for unknown reasons, an officer fired four shots at him.

The rounds were a series of nonlethal and lethal, Famer said. It’s unknown how many were of each.

The incident is under investigation.
